1991-1992

Diane Clymer, flute; El Cerrito High School

Diane has been a member of the California Scholarship Federation for 4 years and has participated in U.C. Berkeley's Accelerated High School Students Program. She's currently deciding between attending U.C. Berkeley or the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in the fall. This summer she plans to "relax," get a job, and practice and, perhaps, go to Master Classes.

Lorena De Jesus, bassoon; College Park High

Lorena, principal bassoonist for O.Y.O. has also been playing in the Diablo Valley College Symphonic Band, the Young Peoples Symphony Orchestra, the District and County High School Honor Jazz Bands and the California State All-Honor Band. She was awarded a Command Performance for solo bassoon and a music scholarship to the University of the Pacific's Band Summer Camp. Lorena plans to attend Los Medanos College in the fall and go on to California State University Hayward.

Ann-Marie Irene Gilmore, tuba; Petaluma High School aka "California Tuba Queen"

There are some people in this world who are indeed fortunate to find, at an early age, their vocation in life and Ann-Marie is one such person. Two and a half years ago Ann-Marie took up the tuba, easier said than done, and fell in love. As we all know, an instrument demands much more than love, and a tuba can be a hard taskmaster. Life for Ann-Marie and her parents has been complicated by the fact that they live in Petaluma and her lessons are in San Francisco. But all that time and work has been worh it; remember we are speaking of love. Last summer she received the "Outstanding Performance on Tuba" award at the Midwestern Music Camp, and recently she received a full scholarship to the University of Kansas School of Performing Arts. She will spend this summer in Spain relaxing on the beach (with just her mouthpiece and friends) and entertaining dreams of playing in a professional orchestra.

Ina Huang, cello; Monte Vista High School

Some people may have difficulty imagining Ina in a rock band playing the bass. I don't. This is one of her goals, in addition to joining a chamber group as a cellist and, perhaps, doing some piano accompaniment. She has many options when she goes to the University of California at Los Angeles in the fall. Ina has been playing the piano for twelve years, the cello for eight years, and has recently taken up the electric bass. She is a member of the National Honor Society and in 1991 received a Cello Award from the Music Teacher's Association of California. She is considering communications as a major.

Kimdai Pham, violin; Berkeley High School

Kimdai will be graduating from Berkeley High School and going on to the University of California at Berkeley. She is interested in biology, but acknowledges that "anything could happen once I get there." Kimdai has been playing the violin for eight years, but hasn't always had the advantage of studying with a teacher. She is looking forward to the opportunities presented at CAL, especially furthering her study and understanding of music.

Les Rogers, trumpet; College Park High

Following graduation from College Park High School in Martinez, Less will be attending California State University at Hayward in the fall and majoring in music performance. He has been playing the trumpet for nine years and was in the State Honor Band in 1991 and 1992. He received the Ann and Gordon Getty Scholarship of $12000. While Les has many hobbies (weightlifting, drawing, reading and basketball) he plans to continue his music and hopes to someday play trumpet professionally.

Emily Wang, viola; J. F. Kennedy High School

Emily not only plays the viola (3 years) and the piano (11 years) but has been active in and out of school. She was the founder of her high school environmental club, named writer of the month, broke "A" division on her debat team, and is a youth educator. She was a delegate to the Interscholastic Association of Southeastern Asia Schools cultural convention from International School Manila, and won their piano competition in 1991. She also plays in the O.Y.O. string ensemble. In her spare time she likes to hike, go tidepooling, study paleontology, physical anthropology, primate behavior and the environment. She will graduate from Kennedy High School in Richmond and go on to the University of California at Berkeley in the fall. And yes, she does plan to return to O.Y.O. Lucky us!
