Mary E. Archer, viola, clarinet, horn; St. Ignatius College Preparatory Mary E. Archer has been playing the French Horn for 5 years and has been in OYO since 1991. After graduating from St. Ignatius College Preparatory she is bound for UC San Diego. She was recently awarded Woman of distinction by the Soroptimist of Berkeley and the Jane Guilarte Memorial Scholarship. Mary looks forward to a life filled with music and a career that involves helping people.
Christina Bogiages, oboe; Lowell High School Christina Bogiages loves music in all its forms. Her instruments are oboe and voice. Christina has been in OYO for two years. She spent 6 years before that with the San Francisco Girls Chorus. This season she has kept busy playing for OYO, the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Pacific Wind Ensemble/ Octet, the Lowell High School Musicals, chamber groups, and singing solo in the jazz ensemble. She swims in her spare time and enjoys all things Greek. This summer Christina plans to catch up on her sleep, work and prepare for her move to the University of Wisconsin where she will receive a music scholarship in the fall. There she plans to major in music, of course.
Paul Bonnell, bass; French American International School Paul Bonnell will graduate from the French American International School and plans to continue his education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He has been playing the double bass for three years. Paul loves to play music and to study music history. He also enjoys tennis, scuba diving and volleyball.
Troy Davis, oboe; El Camino High School Troy Davis has studied the oboe (9 years), saxophone (7 years), and the English horn. He will graduate from El Camino High School in South San Francisco and has received a Bank of America Performing Arts Scholarship. His interests are music, sports and my girlfriend. Troy plans to continue his studies in music and perhaps become a music teacher.
Brady R. Ferguson, violin; San Leandro High School Brady R. Ferguson has played the violin for nine years. This year he has been co-principal of the Oakland Youth Orchestra. He was selected Outstanding Orchestra Student at San Leandro High School and soloist with the SLHS Orchestra, performing the Bruch Violin Concerto. He received a Superior commendation for his command performance at the California Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Festival. He was also a member of the University Orchestra at California State Hayward. Bradys other interests include sound engineering and computers. In the fall he will attend Berklee College of Music in Boston and study music production and engineering. His long term goals are to be a professional sound engineer or play in a major symphony.
Vicky Kim, flute; Acalanes High School Vicky Kim will be graduating from Acalanes High School in Lafayette where she was honored Whos Who Among American high School Students. She also won second place in the Contra Costa Spelling Bee and received a Kaiser Permanente Volunteer Award. Vicky was a member of the California Band Directors Association All-State Honor Band and the Contra Costa County Honor Band. Vicky has studied the flute for 9 years and the violin for 6 years. She admits to being interested in everything and will attend UC San Diego in the fall. She is considering a major in oceanography or biology. She will minor in music and plans to continue playing and possibly teaching music.
Katie Poeck, French Horn; Napa High School Katie Poeck has studied the French Horn (9 years), piano (4 years) and voice. The reward for all these years of study is evident when you read her accomplishments: All State Honor Band (3 years), Northern California Honor Band (3 years), San Francisco Symphony [Youth] Orchestra (2 years), Oakland Youth Orchestra (1 year) and Marin Youth Orchestra (2 years). She will graduate from Napa High School and go to CSU, San Francisco where she will study the French Horn and voice. She hopes some day to play for Disney movies.
Derek Robinson, clarinet; San Leandro High School Derek Robinson has many telents and wears many hats. He has played the clarinet for nine years, and bass clarinet and also sax for three years. This is his third year on OYO. The following are just some of his achievements this year: elected Senate President ProTempore, California-Nevada-Hawaii Key Club Talent winner, orchestra and jazz band soloist, recipient of the Bank of America Achievement Award in Liberal Arts, National Merit Scholar, and class Valedictorian at San Leandro High School. Derek spends his free time involving himself in theatre (preferably musicals), community work, golf, and political activism. This summer he will attend the Key Club International Convention in New Orleans and work as a camp counselor. He will be attending the University of Southern California in the fall as a Trustee Scholar and plans to major in international relations and music. editors note: Derek has been student representative on the OYO board this year. Carla Thude, oboe; College Park High School Carla Thude has played the oboe for six years, also sax for five years and the English horn. She will be graduating from College Park High School in Pleasant Hill and is bound for UC Davis. There, she plans to study life science. Carla has played in the All-State Honor Band (3 yrs.), District and County Honor Symphonic Bands (4 yrs.), District honor Jazz Band (2 yrs.) and Bay Section Honor Band. In her spare time she likes to swim and play music. This summer Carla will work as a lifeguard and swim instructor and in the fall she hopes to get involved in the university music scene at Davis.
Charles Watson IV, violin; Skyline High School Charles Watson IV has been studying the violin and viola for four and two years respectively. He will graduate from Skyline High School with many honors. He will continue his education at Oberlin College, majoring in physics and also Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he will major in composition. Charles won the Oakland Chamber Orchestras Youth Composers Competition. His winning piece, titled Labored Silence, was performed by the Oakland Chamber Orchestra and conducted by Patricia McCann Mancini. He was also a winner in the National American Negro Musicians Youth Concert Competition. In addition, he received High Honors in Geometry and Chemistry on the Golden State Exams. Charles hobbies are comic books and video games. This summer he will return to the Young Musicians Program at the University of California, Berkeley. |
