1994-1995
Kevin Adams, in his first year with OYO, plays in his school band and jazz band and won first chair at State Honor Band this year. Other interests are water polo, basketball and molecular biology. An AP Scholar and CSF life member, Kevin will study cell biology and continue to play trumpet at Cal-Berkeley (and maybe with OYO?) this fall.
Alice Chen has performed with YPSO, her school orchestra, All State Orchestra, and with OYO for the past five years. Her hobbies include tennis, photography and travel. After this summers tour to Asia, Alice plans to continue playing her violin this fall at UC-San Diego.
Ethan Dornhelm has played viola with OYO for two years. The remainder of his time is dedicated to the all American sport of baseball. Ethan received a National Merit commendation and plans to continue his music through ensemble playing at U. C. San Diego.
Robert Guzy is a newcomer to OYO after filling in at the pops concert this season. He has performed with YASO and district and county honor bands. Rob will continue to play trumpet in jazz and symphonic bands and orchestra at the University of Puget Sound next season.
Lawrence Huang has played violin with OYO for 3 years. He also enjoys tennis and travel. He will be performing with an honor orchestra in Taiwan just in time to join the OYO tour in Hong Kong. Lawrence will then attend Ithaca University as a performing arts major.
Kouslaá Kessler-Mata, in her third year at OYO is concertmaster. She also studies at the S.F. Conservatory, and performs in two chamber groups there as well as in the OYO String Quartet. Kouslaá hopes to combine a music major at Conservatory with her interest in urban and cultural history and studies.
Andreas Kleindienst is an exchange student from Germany to Skyline High School this season. He sings with the Oakland Youth Chorus and enjoys seeing and learning about the U.S. on trips with his sponsor group in addition to playing cello with OYO.
Jerry Lee has been with OYO for three years although he dropped one semester to be busy lettering in track, as editor of his school paper, as student body vice-president, and as roving reporter for the television show First Cut. The rest of his time not spent practicing OYO music (hmmmm), he spends looking forward for the food and crew at Yale University.
Josh Mikus-Mahoney joined OYO this year playing cello, but he also enjoys and has won awards as a vocalist such as outstanding senior madrigal and the Bank of America Music Award. After the OYO China, Josh will attend Chapman University to major in music or music therapy.
Carmen Perry joined OYO this year after playing French horn with Bay Area Winds and touring Austrailia with that group.
Laura Schlenke has divided her time between playing viola at school and in OYO and the Lowell High crew team for the last three years. She will attend the University of Washington after the OYO Asia tour this summer.
Brady Schuck has played clarinet for ten years and shared his music at Carnegie Hall with the New Jersey Youth Symphony, on tour to Australia, and this season with OYO. He is looking forward to a continuing clarinet studies as a minor at the University of Virginia this fall.
Christine Uemura has been a violinist with OYO for three years but also enjoyed singing in her schools production of Godspell and aikido. She plans to participate in the Cal-Berkeley orchestra while studying medicine beginning this fall.
Lisa Waitman has also been with OYO for three years while playing in wind ensemble and singing at school. She has attended State Honor Band and Interlochen and other music camps. Lisa has won a $12000 scholarship to study flute performance at the University of Miami School of Music.
Ema Williams has played flute for only four years including this year with OYO, but she hopes to continue to play in groups during college. Ema is an AP Scholar and received a National Merit commendation, and will attend Williams College.
