1997-1998

 

Alan Berquist, flute/piccolo

After 2 years in OYO, Alan plans to attend SF State University in the fall and major in flute performance. He has enjoyed performing the diverse music in OYO and position rotation, and will miss the people and the chances to be involved.

 

Lock Bingham, double bass

Lock has enjoyed playing bass with OYO for one year. He plans at attend Michigan State School of Music. He has also played with YPSO, SF Conservatory, and the Jazz School.

 

Vaness Cajina, trombone

Vanessa, OYO member for one year, enjoyed the good music and playing under a good conductor – and the good tour destination. She received the Bank of America Certificate for Music and was the Bishop O’Dowd General Activity Plaque nominee.

 

Jane Carr, clarinet

Jane will begin Harvard University in the fall, where she plans to play lots of chamber music, learn a lot, and have fun. She played with OYO for two years, and appreciated its high artistic standard and meeting other musicians her age. Jane also played with the SF Conservatory Prep Wind Quintet and the SF University High Chamber orchestra. She is a National Merit Award Finalist.

 

Ben Coates, trumpet

Ben will attend Stanford University in the fall, and then graduate school (hopefully). He has played in OYO for 2 years and also in school bands. He likes playing interesting music and concerts with other groups, and is planning on enjoying this summer’s tour. His awards include the CMEA All State Honors Band, National Honors Society, and National Merit Finalist.

 

George Durham, cello

A one-year OYO veteran, George will attend Cornell University to study mechanical engineering.

 

Philip Gentry, viola

Two years of OYO let Phil appreciate the repertoire and the conductor. He plans to attend Wesleyan University in Connecticut – or, move to Nepal and become enlightened.

 

Elena Hung, violin

After graduation Elena will travel to Europe, and in the fall will go to Princeton University with a chemical engineering major. She has been in OYO for 2 years and enjoyed the repertoire, the pops concert, and meeting new people. She has received science awards, and is a CSF member.

 

Jisun Lee, violin

Jisun has been with OYO for 4 years and enjoyed the tour. A national Merit Finalist, Jisun will attend Wesleyan University in Connecticut.

 

Ben Luey, viola

Ben played for 3 years with OYO and enjoyed the music. He will attend Carleton College in the fall.

 

Meghan Miller, flute

A member of OYO for 2 years, Meghan will attend Cal-State University, Hayward as a music major. She has been a member of Contra Costa County and All-State Honor Bands, and has scholarships from Cal-State Hayward and Concord Pavilion Associates.

 

Warren Shen, violin

A 4-year member of OYO, Warren will study physics at Stanford University. He has performed with Pro Arts Symphony, most recently with Jon Nakamatsu; has received many awards, including National Merit Finalist, and is an Eagle Scout.

 

Jerrie Zee, violin

An OYO member for 4 years and Board representative in 97-98, Jerrie will attend UC-Davis with a double major and minor in law, business economics and film (hopefully!). She will keep playing violin and join the Aggie crew team. Jerrie was part of the Campolindo HS Orchestra. She enjoyed the China tour, meeting new people, and learning more types of music. She is looking forward to this summer’s tour.

 

Matthew Sweer, operations manager

Completing his first year with OYO, Matt recently received his Masters in Music from SF Conservatory. He enjoys being called “maestro.”
