1998-1999
Anna Cooper, viola A four-year OYO veteran, Anna is graduating the Athenian School where she was editor of the school newspaper. She will attend Columbia University in the fall and plans to join or start a string quartet.
Bryant Estep, trumpet After 2 seasons in OYO Bryant is graduating Arroyo High and will major in Music Performance at Cal State Hayward. He won first prize at D.S.C Music Festival and was a member of the Arroyo High Bands and Orchestra.
Nicholas Foster, viola Nick came to the Bay Area for his senior year, joined OYO, broke his arm, and graduated from Berkeley High School. He will attend the University of Minnesota where he will either major or minor in music.
Andrei Gorchov, flute A member of OYO for 1 year, Andrei is graduating Redwood High and will major in music at SF State. He won the Bank of America Music Award and the Marin Symphony Scholarship Award.
Sarah Grenfell, clarinet Sarah has been with OYO for 3 years, and will graduate Acalanes High and attend UCLA, where she plans to join the orchestra or band. She was a member of the State Honor Band and a member of the top 10 finishing Trial Competition team.
Shana Kirsch, cello After 3 years in OYO Shana will graduate from Lick-Wilmerding High School and will attend the Gallatin School of New York University. She has been a member of the Lick-Wilmerding Chamber Singers, and plans to continue her music studies in college.
Robin Kirschbaum, cello Another 4-year OYO veteran, Robin will graduate Bishop ODowd and attend Pomona College. She is a National Merit Commended Student, CA Scholarship Federation Life Member, and plans to join her college orchestra.
David Konigsmark, horn David played with OYO for 1 season while a student at SF School of the Arts and Urban Pioneers. He has also been a member of YPSO, the Bay Area CMEA Honor Group and All City Orchestra and Band. He will study computers at Heald College.
Lawrence Lau, violin Lawrence will graduate from Lowell High School and attend UCSD, where he plans to join the orchestra. He won first place in the Mandarin Speech Contest in 1997 and has played with OYO for 1 year.
Rosie Lazzarotto, bassoon A member of OYO for 1 season, Rosie will graduate from Piedmont High and attend UCLA where she intends to join a music group. She is a National Merit Commended Student and recipient of the Kaiser Junior Volunteer Scholarship.
Helene Lee, cello Helene has played with OYO for 3 years and will graduate from San Domenico and enroll in UC Riversides 7-year Medical program with UCLA. She won 2nd Place in the 1998 MTAC and also won the Wellesley College Book Award. Helene plans to play orchestra and chamber music at UC.
Jason Leith, oboe A National Merit Scholar, valedictorian, and 3 year OYO member, Jason will graduate Acalanes High and attend Williams College. He is an Eagle Scout, a member of the CA State Honor Band, and plans to play in the Williams College Orchestra.
Jeff Matthews, horn Also a National Merit Scholar, Jeff has been an OYO member for 2½ years. He will graduate from Monte Vista High and hopes to attend UCLA in a year. Jeff was a member of the All-State Honor Band and won the Rensselaer Polytechnic Math and Science Award.
Justin Nishioka, bass Justin has played with OYO for 1 year and will graduate from Piedmont High School.
Kenny Pexton, clarinet Kenny will graduate from California High and attend Los Medanos College as a music major. He has played with OYO for 1 year, and also with the State and County Honor Bands. Kenny won the Business Round Table Award for Instrumental Music.
Michal Shein, cello A member of OYO for 3 years, Michal will graduate from Piedmont High and attend UC Berkeley as a music major. She is a CA Scholarship Federation Life Member, and winner of the Music Teachers Assn. of CA Competition and the OYO Concerto Competition.
Neil Smith, trombone Neil has been a member of OYO for 3 years, and will graduate Acalanes High and enroll as a music major at the University of Illinois where he is the recipient of the Illinois Honors Trombone Chair. Neil won the Outlet Magazine 1999 Vision Award for Instrumental Music and was the OYO Board Representative in 199899.
Joshua Trevorrow, percussion A member of OYO for 3 seasons, Josh will graduate from Piedmont High (Go Piedmont!) and attend the Peabody Conservatory of Music at Johns Hopkins University. Josh was a member of the 1999 CMEA Bay Area High School Honor Band and the CSU Hayward Honor Band.
Jia Yao, violin An OYO member for 2 years and former student at the Beijing Central Conservatory, Jia will graduate the Virtuoso Program at San Domenico. In the spring of 1998 she was First Place Winner in the Prometheus Symphony Concerto Competition. Jia will attend the San Francisco Conservatory.
Alicia Young, bassoon A member of OYO for 1 year, Alicia will graduate from Acalanes High and attend Knox College in Galesburg, IL, where she intends to join the city orchestra. Alicia was a member of YPSO and won Command Performance in all CMEA solo and ensemble events entered.
Rachel Yow, flute Rachel has been a member of OYO for 1 year and will graduate Livermore High and attend Luther College where she will major or minor in music. She is a National Merit Commended Scholar, LHS Valedictorian, and LHS Most Outstanding Musician.
